Wildlife conservation recognition
The Wild Sheep Foundation has honored our commitment to protecting North America's desert bighorn sheep at El Carmen Nature Reserve.
Desert bighorn sheep
Desert bighorn sheep are skilled climbers with impressive curved horns. Their unique ability to thrive in harsh environments has won over the symbol of resilience in the wild.
Pilares Desert Bighorn Sheep facility
When the El Carmen Nature Reserve project began in 2000, we started to build the Pilares Desert Bighorn Sheep facility in preparation for our wildlife conservation program. Today, Pilares spans 5,000 hectares within the natural reserve. As of 2023, 250 of these beautiful animals roam around the reserve, with over 100 set free in surrounding areas.
Natural conservation beyond borders
Over 130,000 hectares along the US-Mexico border, El Carmen is one of the most biodiverse areas in North America and one of the five great wilderness ecosystems in the world. A habitat for endemic species, El Carmen contributes to the wildlife conservation of 26% of bird and 16% of mammal species in Mexico.
Rewilding the region
One of our wildlife conservation goals is to bring native species back to the natural reserve. Other animals we've brought back to the land with support from organizations and companies include the American bison, the desert mule deer, and the pronghorn antelope.
