The American bison makes a historic return
After over 100 years, the American bison returned to the Coahuila plains at El Carmen Nature Reserve, thanks to our combined efforts with AES Mexico, the Mexican Fund for the Conservation of Nature (FMCN), the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP), and the Mexican Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT).
El Carmen Nature Reserve: A sanctuary for biodiversity
The El Carmen Nature Reserve is a vast conservation area that spans the Mexico-United States border, covering over 130,000 hectares. It's home to five distinct ecosystems, providing a habitat for various plants, birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. This reserve is one of the largest wildlife areas in the world, dedicated to the recovery of native fauna and the reintroduction of species that once roamed these lands.
United for conservation
We celebrate the reintroduction of the American bison as a significant conservation achievement. Renée González of FMCN sees it as a testament to the strong partnerships between the government, civil society, and the private sector. José Arosa from AES Mexico and Roberto Aviña Carlín from CONANP highlight the project's role in preserving biodiversity and contributing to the species' recovery at a continental level.
A collaboration between natural reserves
Before this project, the only pure bison herd lived at Rancho El Uno in the Janos Biosphere Reserve, Chihuahua, protected by the FMCN. From this herd, 19 bison were carefully chosen and moved to their new home in El Carmen. This important move, guided by wildlife experts and supported by SEMARNAT's technical advice, marks a significant step in helping these magnificent animals thrive again.
A future of reconnection and restoration
The plan to reintroduce the American bison into the El Carmen Nature Reserve started in April 2019 and aims to grow the bison population sustainably over the next few years. This initiative is about bringing back a species and restoring an entire ecosystem. It reminds us of our responsibility to protect the natural world and symbolizes nature's resilience and capacity for positive impact.
