Celebrating the first American bison born at El Carmen
Thanks to dedicated efforts, 2023 marks the completion of the first breeding cycle of the American bison in El Carmen Nature Reserve. This achievement demonstrates the positive impact we can have on our planet's biodiversity. Through dedication and teamwork, we're witnessing the beginning of a new era for these majestic creatures in their ancestral home.
Wildlife conservation and rewilding
After over a century's absence, 19 bison were reintroduced to El Carmen in 2019, sparking a new era of balance and biodiversity. Today, with two new generations thriving, we're celebrating 90 majestic beings calling this reserve home. We aim to welcome 300 bison within the next five years through our dedicated recovery and protection efforts. This is a story of revival, not just for the bison but for the land they grace.
The bison's key role in our ecosystem
As North America's largest mammals, American bison also significantly impact the natural balance of our planet. Their capacity to capture CO2, equal to wetlands and boreal forests, helps restore grasslands, enhance biodiversity, and shape the landscape. It's a reminder of nature's interconnectedness and each species' critical role.
Collaboration and preservation
At the heart of El Carmen's success is a shared commitment, along with our public and private partners, to preserving and enriching our planet's natural treasures. The journey of the bison in El Carmen symbolizes what's possible when we unite in conservation efforts. It's a collaborative vision that sees beyond borders, envisioning a future where nature binds communities and countries together.
Celebrating a conservation milestone
The reintroduction of the bison at El Carmen shows us how teamwork, caring, and effort can make a big difference and is an inspiration for environmental conservation worldwide. It reminds us that we can turn the tide for endangered species and ecosystems together.
